Gawai Exodus 2009

Its That Time of The Year

Yes, its that time of the year again. Gawai Dayak 2009 creeps up on me again. Not that I feel like dragging my feet to greet this happy occassion but the middle of the year is the time when its the peak period, workwise. I have recieved several SMSes from my West Malaysian counterparts who wish to hold meetings (even on 1 June 2009), inspect projects and conduct surveys during this period. Omigosh.... i explained to them that half of the offices in Sri Aman are empty now, as some of our officers have gone on Gawai Holiday. Okay, how about on the 3rd June 2009 they counter proposed. In the spirit of One Malaysia I explained to them that Gawai Celebration in Sarawak is one of a kind. Something akin to once in a year family reuinions amongs Dayaks from all over the world. Even weddings are organised at this time. Its not like those religous holidays where those who observe these events conduct their activities only on that particular day. For this Gawai occassion its something of a 'balik kampung' phenomenon where Dayaks (those ethnic groups that fall in this category), around Sarawak, even outside Sarawak, including overseas. Below are some of the 'balik kampung' scenes during pre Gawai in Sibu that I managed to take this morning.

Sibu Express Terminal scene as celebrants go to board Express Boards back to riverine towns like Kapit and Song and longhouses and villages along the river

Outside the Sibu Express Terminal I was surprised to see that they allowed poultry traders to operate. They sell live chickens even.......

Though the business is good but hygiene wise its filthy and smelly.....I am surprised that they never heard of chicken flu in this part of the town?

The ticket counters at the Express Terminal were full

Express boat passengers waiting patiently to purchase their tickets

Express boat loaded with boxes and travellers at Sibu Express Terminal

Another part of the Express Boat Terminal (going downriver to Kapit, Song and Belaga)

The Sarikei bound boat wharve near the Sibu Express Terminal is also full of travellers

Express boat operators doing brisk business in this part of town

Families wait patiently for their express boats at the Sibu Express Terminal

Its the same scene that I get to see every year since I boarded my first express boat as a child. Looking back at my kins in Sri Aman who enjoy better road access to their longhouses, our part of the world still waits with hoping that one day the roads will reach our part of the world. To all celebrants...may your Gawai be merry....Cheers with Ooohaa.

Selamat Ari Gawai Dayak 2009

Nadai Nama Nama wishes its readers and celebrants a Happy Gawai Dayak 2009. I will be on Gawai leave. Due to the lack of connectivity in the Song Kapit area I may not be able to update the Gawai happenings here but I sure will have some stories to share when I return. Its ironic that a Cyberspace's Warrior destination and also my longhouse area is without connectivity. I have not done enough I think....but the struggle goes on for the community in my area... *sigh*

Happy Harvest Festival

It is with great pleasure that I wish my Sabahan Kadazandusun friends Happy Harvest Festival (Kotobian Tadau Kaamatan), which I believe will be celebrated very soon. There will be an air of festivity and celebration in the various corners of Sabah not only amongst the Kadazandusun but also everyone in Sabah as they come and visit relatives and friends.

I, too wish to thank my great friend Doc Bala, from ERE Consulting Group for having me in their mind during this Harvest Festival and I suppose Mr. Paul of NREB Sarawak who himself is a Bidayuh will be happy too when recieving this card.

A wonderful card with the wording "Another %$#(*&^@# greeting card from ERE Consulting Group" and the wording "Respect the spirit, Respect the Land"

The message in the card tells the story of the Creator by the name of Kinoingan who gives us this precious rice grain so that we would never be hungry. He had to sacrifice his daughter Huminodun and from this ultimate act of love, rice (paddy) grew from her body parts. Today we repay the deed by honouring Bambaazon, the spirit of Huminodun. The ceremony is our Tadau Ka'amatan.

You have done it again ERE Consulting with your touching cards. So I do think that I would be recieving my Gawai Dayak card soon? The costumes are different and I welcome it if you wish to use the above images of our Dayak maidens. Though our celebrations do mean the same thing and that is 'Harvest Festival' but we do have another name for our celebration as the Terms of Reference (Gawai Dayak Creator's will not be Kinoingan) is different. So i will be checking my mail box and I believe Mr. Paul will be waiting too.

Happy Harvest Festival everyone and to you too Doc, happy Holidays :)

Lim Hock Meng Goes to LA

Sri Aman Division is getting another strong man to its team of administrators in the person of Mr. Lim Hock Meng. Mr. Lim arrives this morning at the Sri Aman Resident Office enroute to Lubok Antu District - the Office he will serve. Its good to have familiar faces around as Mr. Lim was serving with me at the State Planning Unit since 2001. We have a relationship that goes beyond M-16s, Time Bombs, Snipers, Dawn of War Games - in the form of computer games. Meeting up at Cyber Cafes to thrash Evil or become Evil when we were in Kuching. He is a strict disciplinarian when he was the Administrative officer in the State Planning Unit and I used to be the focus of his affection - not because I always beat him in the War Games I think. Welcome to Sri Aman Divison Lim!

From Left: Mr. Rano Alwino Akat, Mr. Jack Aman, Sri Aman Ketua Polis Daerah Encik Mat Jusoh, myself and Mr. Lim Hock Meng

Mr. Rano Alwino Akat and Mr. Aba Ugi (striped shirt) changes the helmet that does not have the SIRIM sign

I did not waste any time in bringing Mr. Lim Hock Meng into action as I brought him to participate in the Sri Aman Road Safety Campaign headed by the Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya Negeri (JKJRN) Sarawak. It was fortunate that I got to meet a blog reader of mine who happened to be Mr. Rano Aylwini Akat - the Director for the JKRJN. He is active in promoting road safety so in support for his campaign I pledge to be a good road user when I travel to and fro Kuching Sri Aman and when I go back for Gawai Dayak soon.

New Timbalan Residen(Social)

Felicia Tan with the Resident of Sri Aman Division

The Resident Office of Sri Aman is welcoming a new Deputy Resident (Timbalan Residen) who will be focusing a lot on the Social Agenda implementation for Sarawak, especially for Sri Aman Division. I will be focusing on the Development aspect and I am glad that the extra job will be divided equally with my new team member. Welcome to Sri Aman Felicia.

Slowing Down the Pace

Nadai Nama Nama is slowing down its postings pace in the current month as it will be the start of a hectic work schedule for me and my team in the Development Section. In the list is the upcoming Dewan Undangan Negeri Meeting where we have to standby and update our Development database, prepare for the State Level DYMM Agung Birthday to be hosted by Sri Aman Division and also the Majlis Raja-Raja which will be hosted by the State of Sarawak. So I won't be attending the Dewan unless I need to sit in for my Resident. The most important of all is - clearing the backlogs including travelling around the Distrcits and Sub Districts here so that I can go for my Gawai leave :) In addition to that there may be some issues on blogs coming up in the Dewan Undangan Negeri so I do not want to say much at the moment.

Down but not out

BGT: Jamie Pugh

Bravo Jamie!

I am less of an American Idol fan or any local reality show but Britain's Got Talent (BGT) is my weekly digestion since discovering about it this year. The latest one by featuring Jamie got me moved - always the case on some hidden talent uncovered in an ordinary person who does not know they have it or are to shy to show it. This year looks promising for the famed Susan Boyle and the simple music teacher, Julian Smith. As with ordinary phone salesman Paul Pots (BGT Winner 2007) and the 'Never Quit' attitude of George Sampson (BGT Winner 2008), this show is about courage and overcoming that fear barrier to discover your true strength. Jamie, the Warehouse worker and the Pizza Guy, performed well. Jamie you have my vote here!
